Common Menstrual Problems & When to See a Gynecologist

Menstrual issues are common and can vary depending on your age and stage of life. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what’s normal — and when it’s time to visit a gynaecologist like Dr Sairandhri Kate-Shinde at Hera Clinic:

Adolescents (Teenage Years)

  • Irregular periods: Normal in the first few years after periods begin.
  • Heavy bleeding: If it affects daily life or causes weakness, consult a doctor.
  • Painful periods (Dysmenorrhea): Mild pain is common, but severe pain should be checked.

Reproductive/Childbearing Age

  • Missed or irregular periods
  • Spotting between periods
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Heavy bleeding with clots
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Pain during periods or intercourse

If these symptoms are frequent or troubling, it’s important to seek medical help.

Perimenopause (Transition to Menopause)

  • Irregular bleeding
  • Heavy or continuous bleeding

Though common, these should still be evaluated to rule out any underlying issues.

  • Any bleeding after menopause
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge

Postmenopausal bleeding is not normal and should always be investigated.

What Happens When You Visit the Doctor?

If you have any of these symptoms, the doctor may recommend:

  • Clinical examination
  • Blood tests like:
    • Thyroid function tests
    • Prolactin levels
    • Hemoglobin levels
  • Ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis to check the uterus and ovaries, endometrial thickness, any polyp, fibroids, cysts etc
  • Further testing (like hormonal studies, pap smear, biopsy, etc.)

Don’t ignore the signs. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference.
