Cervical Cancer Screening: When to Start and Why It’s Life-Saving
By Dr. Sairandhri Kate-Shinde – Consultant Gynecologist | Hera Clinic, Punawale, PCMC Pune
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable yet life-threatening cancers in women — and early detection can make all the difference. Cervical cancer screening, including the Pap smear and HPV test, plays a crucial role in saving lives by detecting abnormal cervical cells before they turn cancerous.
In this blog, we explain when to start cervical cancer screening, what the tests involve, and why regular screening is essential for every woman’s health.
What Is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer occurs in the cells of the cervix — the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is primarily caused by persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) strains. The disease develops slowly, which makes early detection through screening highly effective in prevention and cure.
What Is Cervical Cancer Screening?
Cervical cancer screening involves tests that detect:
- Precancerous changes in the cervix
- HPV infection that can lead to cancer
The two main screening tests are:
- Pap Smear Test – Detects abnormal cells on the cervix
- HPV Test – Identifies high-risk HPV strains
When Should You Start Cervical Cancer Screening?
Age 21–29 Years
- Start with a Pap smear every 3 years
- HPV testing is not recommended unless Pap results are abnormal
Age 30–65 Years
- Preferred: Co-testing (Pap + HPV) every 5 years
- Alternative: Pap smear alone every 3 years
Age 65+ Years
-
Screening can stop if:
- You’ve had regular normal test results
- No history of cervical precancer or cancer
Women who’ve had a hysterectomy may still need screening if the surgery was due to cervical cancer or pre-cancer.
Who Is at Higher Risk?
Women are at increased risk of cervical cancer if they have:
- Multiple sexual partners
- Early sexual activity
- Smoking habits
- Weak immune system
- History of HPV infection or abnormal Pap results
- No regular screening
For high-risk women, more frequent screening may be required.
Why Is Cervical Cancer Screening So Important?
-
Early Detection Saves Lives
Cervical cancer develops slowly, giving ample time for early intervention. -
Precancerous Cells Can Be Treated
If abnormal cells are caught early, they can be treated before cancer develops. -
Reduces Mortality Rates
Regular screening has drastically reduced cervical cancer deaths worldwide.
What About the HPV Vaccine?
The HPV vaccine is a game-changer in preventing cervical cancer.
- Recommended for girls and boys aged 9 to 26 years
- Women up to age 45 may benefit after consulting their doctor
- Even if vaccinated, screening must still continue
